Special tours: Fully-Custom Giro d’Italia Granfondi
The official presentation of the Giro usually takes place in November. Until then few details are known of the route and calendar. Please check back here after the presentation in November for possible special tours by Agile Compass featuring stages in Piemonte and/or the Dolomites. We feature the mountain stages and the time-trials, where you have more time to see the racers up close, whereas in the flatter stages the whole peloton whizzes by in the blink of an eye.
Alberto Contador of team Astana finished in the pink jersey as overall winner of the Giro. Ricardo Riccó of team Saunier-Duval Scott came in second after trailing Contador by mere seconds in the final 2 mountain stages. Veteran Marzio Bruseghin of team Lampre tenaciously hung onto his shrinking lead over Franco Pellizotti of team Liquigas in the final time-trial stage for a podium finish in 3rd place.
We saw the Giro Live in the Dolomites, choosing day-by-day where to see the stages, depending on the abilities of our guests and the road-closing times. We were at Tesero for the mountain finish of stage 14 at Alpe di Pampeago after climbing Passo San Pellegrino coincidentally just behind la tappa del Giro (analogous to l’Etappe du Tour). The next morning we climbed Passo Pordoi to catch stage 15 there, then enjoyed the stunning views along Passo Sella and Passo Gardena on the way to San Vigilio di Marebbe. For the grueling mountain time-trial of stage 16 thanks to the ski-lift gondolas we were able to see the start in S. Vigilio, the mid-point at Passo Furcia (Furkelpass) and the finish at Kronplatz (Plan di Corones). The following morning (a rest day for the Giro) we had the option to climb Passo Furcia in peaceful sunshine and try a section of the unpaved upper tract to Kronplatz before concluding it would be too slow and treacherous descending it on road bikes. We’ll add a photo/video montage of our tour shortly…
We saw the Giro Live in Piemonte (and Liguria) at the stage 10 climbing finish at Santuario Nostra Signora della Guardia near Genoa, and stage 12 at the Cima Coppi (highest point in the Giro at 2744 m, 9003 ft), Colle dell’Agnello, at the border with France.
